Time for some more recommendations. I got a few PMs from the last one, so I know at least 4 of you are reading this…
Let’s start off with a manga whose plot is very straight forward and at times repetitive. In addition, there are several clichéd characters. I bet you’re thinking, “Why would I want to read that?” Well, that’s because it’s a great comedy. The manga is Angel Densetsu (http://thesubwire.com/series/848/Angel_Densetsu_(Manga)). The basic story is there’s a really nice kid. The only problems is that he has a very scary face, so people think he’s dangerous at first glance. Once he transfers to a new school, he ends up beating up the “guardians” of the school by accident. After that event, everyone stays out of his way as they fear him.
As I said before, lots of repetition due to the face that everyone thinks he’s dangerous when they first meet him. You also have your standard characters (the tough girl, the assassin turned friend, the underlings). But even with all of that, the author does a good job of using all of those to make you laugh. The author does a really good job with the dialog, which not only adds to the comedy, but also makes the characters more likable despite being stereotypical. So, if you’re looking for a comedy with some fighting action, this would be a good one to check out.
The second manga today is also a comedy. Yotsubato! (http://thesubwire.com/series/514/Yotsubato!_(Manga)) has no story line really; it’s a pure slice of life comedy. It’s about a 5 year old girl that has been adopted by a single man (hey, stop those dirty thoughts you sick bastards!). She came from a remote island and there are many common things she knows nothing about. The comedy is focused around the girl and he interactions with the people and world around her. It’s a cute manga, and a great read for when you want something to cheer you up.
Well, to end today I’ll post a manga that would be rated R. Parasyte (http://thesubwire.com/series/2920/Parasyte_(Manga)) also known as Kiseijuu, is one of the best horror mangas I have read. But to be warned, this manga has graphic violence, and nudity (and sometimes both at the same time). This is one of the few manga that had a page or two that actually shocked me with its content (one of the guys is beyond sick). That being said, the story line is wonderful.
The story is set in present day Japan. An unknown force decides that humans need to be reduced for the good of the planet (don’t worry, this isn’t a political piece). To do that, a bunch of parasites are sent down to infect people and take over their brains. Once they do that, they need to eat humans to survive. Besides just taking over their brains, the parasites are also able to change the form of the body, which enables them to turn the body into deadly blades, or make the body as hard as rock.
The main character gets infected by one of these parasites, but he notices and is able to stop the parasite from reaching his brain. Because of this, the parasite was only able to take control of his hand and arm. Wanting to stay alive, the parasite now shares the body with the main character and helps to defend him against other parasites that want to kill him. Meanwhile, the main character is trying to figure out how to warn the world about these parasites. To make things even more interesting, the way the main character thinks starts to change over time. This makes him wonder how much of him is actually left, and how much has the parasite taken over his body and mind.
This has a great story, and some well drawn action scenes. But as I mentioned before, it is very graphic. So if you have a weak stomach, you should probably pass on this one.
Well, that’s it for now. I hope you find at least one manga out of this list you like. Also, if you have a favorite manga that you want me to read, feel free to PM me with the name.
